I accepted that our visit to the Amalfi Coast wouldn’t really bring any “wow” when it came to food.  Up until now, I was pleasantly surprised.  The food was certainly more satisfying than Rome.  With it being the end of the trip, the laziness was at full force and I went against my usual policy of never eating at a hotel restaurant.  However, the reviews of Caesar Augustus’ La Terraza di Lucullo were pretty outstanding.  The staff HIGHLY recommended the place.  The views from the restaurant were breathtaking, but the days were short during this time of year and the weather was taking quite a turn.  We dined with the pitch black sea on one side and crazy winds whipping against the windows on the other.

Polpo di Roccia Arrosto con Crema di Zucca e Frutta Secca roasted rock octopus with creamed pumpkin and dried fruit
Tender and perfectly charred octopus.  The sweetness of the pumpkin was balanced nicely with the tart dried fruit.  DSC06217

Spaghettoni di Gragnano con Cannolicchi, Cozze, Finocchietto e Tarallo di Agerola spaghettoni with razor clams, mussels, wild fennel, agerola biscuit
We had many versions of seafood pasta during our trip, but this was certainly the most sophisticated.DSC06222

Tortelli alla Genovese Napoletana, Verdure Amare e Provolone del Monaco neopolitan style tortelli alla genovese, bitter vegetables, provolone del monaco cheese
Delicate, light, balanced flavors.  I wished for a dozen more.DSC06224

Guancia di Maiale Brasata con Purè di Patate e Papaccelle con Olive e Capperi braised pork cheek with pureed potato and papaccelle peppers, olives and capers
The restaurant was accommodating and let us swap out the main entree in the tasting menu with this wonderfully braised tender pork cheek.  DSC06230

Ricciola Cotta in Olio con Broccoli, Crema all’aglio e Peperoncino amberjack with broccoli, creamy garlic sauce and peperoncino
Another flawless dish.DSC06232

Tortino Caldo al Cioccolato con Gelato al Frutto della Passione warm chocolate flan with passion fruit ice cream
A fancy molten lava cake.  DSC06236

The chocolate actually didn’t clash with the passionfruit ice cream as much as I thought it would.  DSC06243

This was easily the BEST restaurant during our whole tour of Italy.  The food was seasonal, ingredients were fresh with all the vegetables grown in their own kitchen garden, the flavors were balanced and perfectly executed.  There was nothing I could fault.  For a little island to have such a talented chef and kitchen staff is a wonder to me.  La Terraza definitely deserves at least 2 Michelin stars in my opinion.  I would love to return here in the future.
