I guess the Weather God wasn’t smiling down upon me during my birthday NYC trip.  It was gloomy, a little cold, and rainy.  So we were glad to finally escape the drizzle when we stepped into Milk Bar.  I probably should not have expected so much for my first Momofuku experience.  Unfortunately, I was really underwhelmed by the store.  For starters it’s pretty small and it doesn’t look there is much turnover.  From the shelves which were lined with tons of cookie, cake, and other dry mix products, to the basket of prepackaged baked goodies, everything just looked old and unwanted.  It’s a good thing I didn’t come for any of the baked good.

Cereal Milk & Crack Pie Soft Serve cornflake crunch
I was really pleased by the soft serve.  It was smooth, creamy, and not too sweet.  The cereal milk was my favorite.  The crack pie flavor was a tad too sweet for me.  The cereal milk, on the other hand, was more subtle and interesting.  Who doesn’t like cereal milk?  The cornflake crunch was really quite sweet and salty, but I liked the added texture it provided.  

Compost Cookie

I would like to think I’m a bit of a cookie connoisseur.  I love cookies and I make a great chocolate chip cookie.  The look of the cookies did not bode well.  They just looked so dry and old.  I only bought one because I figured I should at least try it since I had heard so much about it, the compost cookie especially.  It tasted as bleh as it looked.  I have a hard time believing these cookies were made the same day.  I would be even more shocked if they were selling day old cookies.  

So A+ for the soft serve, but C for everything else.  The store just seemed a bit sloppy.  The cashier wasn’t so helpful and didn’t really exude any passion for the products.  The baked goods looked unappetizing.  Milk Bar has totally sold out to mass production, as evidenced by the stacks of take-home dry mixes you can buy.  I guess I can’t be too surprised because I did hear that Milk Bar was more hype than not.  I’m just glad I get to say so for myself.
