I never understood why people made such a big deal about gelato.  It just looked like a softer version of American ice cream.  I’ve had gelato before, and in Italy even, but that was YEARS ago before my love for food really kicked into obsession level.  We had some gelato in Spain, but we weren’t too impressed.  Gelato in Italy is on a other level.  The choices are mind boggling, but Grom was on a few “best” lists and it was conveniently located in the tourist area of Rome.

Crema di Grom
Pera
The crema di Grom is best described as a creamy sweet custard.  The pear flavor was probably the standout.  It really left a lasting impression on me.  No doubt it was probably all pear, water, and sugar with no other additives.DSC05802

I’m just gonna venture out and say that much of the food in other countries taste better than America because they start with better ingredients.  The dairy in Europe definitely has a creamy richer taste that results in better foods like gelato.  The produce is cultivated for flavor rather than for mass production.  The integrity of mother nature’s bounty remains preserved, which ultimately leads to better end products.  I feel like that’s probably what gives your average gelateria in Europe the edge.
