Sizuya

Sizuya
Multiple locations throughout Kyoto

There’s not much in the way of breakfast restaurants in Japan.  It just seems like bakeries for some quick pastries and baked goodies are the best breakfast options.  We were lucky to be staying so close to one of Sizuya’s many locations, its most popular one at Kyoto Station.

There were so many delicious options.DSC08889DSC08890DSC08892

Delicious milk bread filled with cream.  Delightful!DSC08894

With it being spring, sakura everything was all over Kyoto.  I never really knew what sakura flavored things tasted like, and these were too pretty to pass up.  The filling was a bean paste in texture, but some cross in flavor between red bean and tea.  Maybe I’m wrong and there’s a better way to describe sakura, but because of the bean paste texture I wasn’t too big a fan of this.  Plus it was a little too sweet for me.  The bread part was perfect though.DSC08893

Another cream filled delight.  The cream here was more of a runny custardy cream.  The dough was more flakey than a milk bread.  The Annoyer liked it more than I did.DSC08897

This was really the reason I came to Sizuya.  I LOVE Japanese curry, so naturally I LOVE curry pans.  These were particularly delicious because they were still warm!  If you’re not familiar with curry pans, its like a panko crusted fried donut filled with curry sauce and usually some meat, either chicken or beef.DSC08891

The filling was some of the deepest richest flavored curry sauce ever.  My mind was BLOWN.  Being so fresh and still warm, you could really appreciate the crispy outer layer, chewy donut dough part, and the contrast of saucy filling.  Seriously, BEST curry pan ever!  YUUUUUMMMMSSSS!!DSC08896

For the curry pans alone, Sizuya is amazing.  If you don’t like curry pans, Sizuya has a delicious selections of baked goodies sure to please any palate.  You don’t even need to come here for breakfast because this location of Sizuya is slinging carbo calorie bombs till 10pm at night.  I probably would have eaten here twice in one day, since it was always on our way back to our hotel, had I not always been so full from our other eating escapades.
